Trainers and facilitators have survived decades of technological “revolutions” that promised to change the world, only to fizzle out into meaningless fads.

Because technologies have come and gone, the core style of many facilitators and training agencies hasn’t fundamentally shifted. But AI, specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), offers a genuinely different proposition. It gives independent facilitators and small agencies the power to deliver the bespoke, high-end training once reserved solely for massive corporate budgets.

We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stop producing the generic content that litters the modern training landscape. Imagine a world where the soul-destroying “click-to-complete” e-learning is permanently consigned to the digital landfill. Imagine retiring the outdated “knowledge banking” approach, where a speaker stands at the front of a room barking knowledge and data points, and replacing it with meaningful, immersive experiences that promote profound change and growth in our learners.

This isn’t just a dream; it’s the start of a reality.

This brings us to a critical dilemma: do we want to succeed and drive corporate training forward, or will we roll over and let AI replace us? If we choose to stand still, we are, in effect, choosing a “Comfortable Grave” for the death of our professional careers as corporate trainers. This leaves only one question you need to ask yourself as a facilitator or training agency: Are you ready to become AI-Augmented?

Augmenting your practice isn’t about letting the machine replace you; it’s about evolution. It’s about using LLMs to extend and enhance the human wisdom you already possess. The word “Augmentation” might still conjure up science-fiction imagery of Data in Star Trek or Neo in The Matrix. Yet, here in 2026, it is a practical reality. It is our opportunity to embrace a massive leap forward in how we provide transformative training that is easily deliverable and highly measurable.

To truly grasp this shift, we need a new vocabulary. Rosi Braidotti’s Posthuman philosophy provides us with a magnificent lens through which to observe this reality. It gives us the language to find meaning, overcome our resistance, and build a completely new landscape for our era.

The Braidotti Lens: Redefining the Human and Machine Boundary

Dr. Rosi Braidotti’s Posthuman philosophy (1) offers a brilliant framework for navigating the blurring boundary between human and machine. In her work, she dismantles the classical, arrogant idea of “Man” as the centre of the universe. This is an outdated, exclusionary ideal of perfection best left to the history books. Instead, Braidotti presents a vision where humans are deeply integrated, coexisting in a harmonious dependency with animals, the earth, and technology.

For the purposes of our industry, we must focus on this decentralisation of “Man” and the concept of the posthuman becoming one with machine.

By removing the human from the absolute centre, Braidotti’s philosophical lens allows us to see technology not as the agent of our extinction, but as a partner in our coexistence. This shift in perspective is essential. It is the only way to put a stop to the infernal, exhausting argument of machines replacing us.

When we stop defending our centrality, we can finally see the opportunities opening up. We begin to view these advancements not as replacements, but as profound enhancements. When we treat AI as an extension or augmentation of our own capabilities, we realise we aren’t going extinct. We are evolving.

In practical terms, LLMs have become incredible engines of data synthesis. They provide answers, help develop frameworks, and proffer ideas we might not have considered or even conceived yet. We retain the ultimate agency to choose what and how we apply these ideas, but we now have a “Cognitive Exoskeleton” that infinitely augments our thinking process.

However, there is a critical warning in this philosophy. We must deeply understand this new relationship. While the human has been decentralised, the technology must not take our place. If we surrender our agency and allow the LLM to do the work for us, we fall straight into the AI-First trap. If we allow this to happen, we are guilty of a massive philosophical misstep. Neither the human nor the machine requires centrality; it is the partnership between them that holds the real power.

The Reality Check: Why Handing Over the Keys Creates a Landfill and Natural Disaster

Braidotti’s Posthuman philosophical lens allows us to experience the development of Large Language Models (LLMs) not as a future displacement of humanity, but as an opportunity for enhancement. However, before we fully embrace this technology, we must clearly define what we are actually dealing with.

The definition of AI has been heavily manipulated in recent years. At its core, true Artificial Intelligence refers to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a non-biological system capable of independent, conscious thought. Think of HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. While there is plenty of publicity hype suggesting certain models have begun to demonstrate behaviours implying consciousness, the reality is far more grounded.

Current LLMs are not conscious, and they cannot be classified as true AGI. They are predictive algorithms, often programmed to provide pleasing answers to the end user. They still hallucinate, occasionally fabricating strong arguments or citations that are completely divorced from reality. While the models are getting better at cross-checking facts, the greatest danger with LLMs lies in their data synthesis. They inherently gravitate towards a central, popular, and generic output. This is useful if you want to broadcast a standard message to a general audience, but it is disastrous when you need to create something unique and bespoke.

Consider a practical example. If you ask an LLM to generate an e-learning module to support a face-to-face facilitation, it can easily provide a fully worked-out storyboard. With a very simple prompt, you can generate quizzes, text, and structure for what looks like a beautiful, attractive course. However, when you dig into the nitty-gritty, you will find a beautifully generic monster.

It will almost certainly rely on “knowledge banking”, the outdated assumption that learning occurs simply by telling people what they need to know. This results in the soul-destroying “click-to-complete” module. Research over the last century has proven this is the least effective way to acquire knowledge or drive behavioural change. Yet, it remains the most common approach in our industry because it is cheap and quick to produce. The LLM is not to blame; it is simply reproducing the most frequent style of learning material it finds in its training data.

If we give the LLM full control, we are effectively churning out content that is nothing more than digital landfill.

The irony is that this digital landfill has a very real physical cost. Here, it is worth returning to Braidotti’s other vectors of the Posthuman: our coexistence with Animals (Zoe) and the Earth(Gaia). These digital landfills consume vast mineral resources to build servers and immense energy to cool them. Communities are even seeing natural water resources diverted to manage the intense temperatures of massive data centres, leaving the community with no viable natural drinking water (2). This ethical reality serves as a stark reminder. Before we generate content with AI, we m ust ensure it genuinely provides value, rather than just creating it because we can.

Is it all doom and gloom? Should we abandon the idea of using AI in Learning and Development? Absolutely not. The progression forward lies in the AI-Augmented approach. By combining our deep, bespoke human experience with the rapid processing power of AI, we elevate our output rather than surrendering it.

The Stepping Stone: The Human-Dominant Hybrid

We have explored the consequences of giving an LLM free rein: substandard content for our learners and destructive environmental outcomes for vulnerable communities. The reality is that we must be far more mindful in our creation. We have a duty of care to ensure what we produce is of significant, undeniable value.

This is where human expertise must shine through. We must stop treating LLMs as fully functioning AGI and instead embrace a paradigm shift. This is the moment we combine the expertise of humans with the processing power of AI to create something that actually lifts up our learners. We are not decentralising the human; we are creating the AI-Augmented Facilitator.

In practice, how does this work? Let’s return to the course creation example. In the first instance, the human facilitator must take absolute control of the course structure. We use our expertise to design tools that develop deep understanding and drive lasting behavioural change. One of these fundamental tools I use often is branching scenarios. These do not just test knowledge; they slowly instil an instinctive, real-world response in the learner. An other crucial element of this modern approach is feedback. It’s not just telling someone if they are right or wrong, but explaining why and how to adjust in the future. Feedback must have a genuine and realistic “feedforward” aspect to be genuinely helpful.

These pedagogical/andragogical concepts remain outside the mainstream of generic training, which is exactly why most LLMs do not prioritise them on an initial pass. As a facilitator, I have the skills to build this architecture. I can look critically at the generic output from an LLM, refine it, and perfect it. When I then bring a Subject Matter Expert (SME) into this augmented process, we suddenly have a superpower in the room. The training architecture is rooted in modern neuroscience and learning methodology, while the SME can instantly turn the AI’s generic synthesis into bespoke, highly specific content. The SME doesn’t need to be an expert in training design; they just provide the unique context that the LLM lacks.

The LLM becomes an integrated part of our development cycle, iterating ideas faster than we can type them. We use our, beliefs, knowledge, and lived experience to hone those iterations into a perfect combination of meaningful learning. This creates a standard of training that is far more powerful than what any human or any LLM could achieve on their own.

By combining the AI-Augmented Facilitator with the SME, we unlock a recipe for quick, agile, and fiercely effective training. This is how the small agencies and independent facilitators take on the big establishments. We can now create high-quality, bespoke learning experiences at a production speed and price point that finally allows us to compete with the cheap “click-to-complete” and “knowledge banking” that has dominated our industry for decades.

More importantly, we can harness this technology responsibly, ensuring our demands on the system are measured, purposeful, and ethically sound. We have a huge opportunity to bring about meaningful, lasting change in our industry. It is time to step-up, augment our practice, and leave the digital landfill behind.

Instead, we should focus on the powerful, harmonious integration of Human, Earth (Gaia), Animals (Zoe), and Technology. This broader perspective helps us surface the real ethical problems occurring around the unchecked use of AI. Beyond highlighting the risks, it allows us to form a pragmatic, productive relationship with the technology. We no longer see it as a threat, but as a co-creator.

The true power in the training and development world lies in this hybrid state. When we augment our practice with AI and choose to see the LLM as a “Cognitive Exoskeleton,” our ability to produce high-end, meaningful content skyrockets. When we view AI not as a replacement, but as an augmented extension of ourselves—much like a pair of glasses or a hearing aid—we experience a profound shift in perspective. It opens the door to a much brighter future for our industry.
